Meet the team

Sue Thirkettle

Office and Building Manager

"Our Swiss army knife. AKA: The woman that does it all"

Hi I'm Sue! I've been involved with Haven for over 40 years, and throughout this time, I've seen how simple acts of kindness can truly transform communities.  I'm trained in not-for-profit management and am passionate about equipping individuals and groups with tools they need to grow sustainably and thrive long-term. I'm a purpose-driving person and currently work with several charities whose missions deeply resonate with me.

In my downtime, I enjoy gardening, reading and listening to music.

Pirie Brown

Director

"The man, the myth the legend.

Drinks black coffee like Jack Reacher"

Hi I'm Pirie! I have decades of experience in charity work, business ownership, leadership, and being an agent of change for business and charities. My wife Lynne and I were founding members of Haven, though we stepped away from community  to raise our young family (I continued to serve on the board). I took on the role of Director in 2011.

We have five adult children and twelve grandchildren—Christmas is wonderfully chaotic, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. My hobbies include going on bike trips with friends, spending quality time with family, writing, reading, lifestyle farming, and relaxing in Whangamata.

Zara Parkin

Community Development Manager

"Strategist, connector, planner and raiser of funds. All powered by coffee"

Hi I'm Zara! I've been a board member at Haven since 2013 and, in 2024, I stepped into the role of Community Development Manager. I’ve spent the past 12 years working in the not-for-profit sector, gaining experience in fundraising, event management, and community engagement.

My husband James and I have two young children and two ragdoll cats. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, playing netball, travelling, crafting, and, of course, enjoying a good coffee!

"A Group of individuals dedicated to Haven and a thriving community"

who are we

HAVEN AVONDALE

Haven is a for-purpose charity with over 50 years of service to the community. Haven today is a thriving Community Hub and Community Service Office at 1855 Great North Road, Avondale. As a Community Hub, we maintain an open-door policy, making our spaces affordable and accessible to a diverse range of ethnicities, groups, and individuals.

We love AVONDALE and our mission is to support and enhance the positive efforts already happening in our neighbourhood. We do this by providing spaces to bring people together, and through our community support services: including administrative, financial, governance, and guidance assistance to individuals, community charities, and businesses. Haven captures the good that is already going on in our neighbourhood and help facilitate that good work so it can continue.

Haven's history

Haven's rich history...

Haven has a long-standing history of serving the people and communities of Auckland, particularly in Avondale.
Our trust was founded by a group of individuals who were passionate about living in community, building meaningful connections, and serving those around them. Their vision was to see people thrive and reach their full potential in life.

While our services have evolved over the years, our core values have remained the same. These values continue to guide everything we do and shape the way we support our community.

Simplicity: To seek to live simple, unstressed lives focused on the essential across our community actions.

Social Connection: Supporting, promoting and strengthening opportunities for people to be connected to their neighbours and community. Fostering a sense of belonging, collaboration, and mutual support to strengthen connections and achieve common goals.

Collaboration: Building ‘Social Capital’ by seeking to work in partnership with other agencies in our area, endeavouring to build a better community and society. Working together to amplify impact and foster a sense of unity and shared purpose.

Servant Leadership: Leading with empathy, humility, and a commitment to empowering and supporting those we serve. Having a willingness to prioritise, support and meet the needs of others rather than pursuing our own individual projects, programmes or goals.

Hospitality: Creating a welcome, inclusive, and caring environment where everyone feels valued and respected. Extending kindness, courtesy, and friendship to all; but especially to the poor (the marginalized, and lonely).

Our History dates back to the 1970's

We ran a Social Welfare home and mentoring place through Haven in Herne Bay.

1985

Founding members Gayle and Geoff , Sue, Pirie and Lynne formed community and moved to Avondale. We owned and ran a large community house. We started hosting international organisations speaking through NZ who then established their NZ operations.

1986

This year was when we started the important work of connecting Charities and offering governance support. Holding  governance roles continues to this day and is a big part of our values/ethos.

1987

Kodesh Trust was formed. Strategic priorities established and core-values named to inform the direction of the Trust. Accommodation was made available to live in community; support for those journeying through family breakdowns and mental health.

1990

A further large neighbouring house (Shalom Trust) was expanded into the community/Kodesh.

1997

Identified a need and started hosting the migrant community/particularly Asian. We opened our home to migrants and students, who needed a place to belong and settle into life in New Zealand. These relationships continue to this day.

1999

Gayle and Geoff, co founders of  Orama Trust, stepped into the Directorship role at Great Barrier Island.

2003

Hosted Creation Care Study Programme for the first time in NZ. Funding generational Environmental commitment. They continue to operate in NZ.

2012

Renamed to Haven Foundation, amalgamated two Trusts (Shalom and Kodesh). Pirie took over Directorship of the Trust. Avondale local networking had started to gather momentum.

2016

Sold community residential houses and relocated to running an office hub and renting 2 residential houses locally.

2019

Purchased 1855 Great North Road and started Haven Avondale. A community offering and place to create opportunities for people, groups and businesses to meet, collaborate their ideas, and come together over coffee.
